migrate to Indians, support Indians to reach the APEX

Ok my point here is, weren't we fascinated when first time we came across Orkut. And for that matter Flickr, Blogger.com. We quickly participated in this Web 2.0 sites. Or rather people even migrated to these popular sites.

Its enough that we are using this International sites. We should switch over to indian sites that provide these experience. By indian sites, i mean sites started by Indian Borns or NRIS etc... Just support this guys to make it big to the most hit sites on the internet. Heres the list

Flickr version of India(by IITians) : Picsquare
Orkut version of india : Fropper
Blogger version of India : RediffBlogs or RedifIland.

Actually if u all are using fropper.com u dont have to go anywhere else.
It provides u blogging service, photo album service, social networking service, dating service embedded in your web page.

I am not promoting fropper. I was really fascinated when i saw all these service in one site. Its really handy to use.

cheers

REVERSE BRAIN DRAIN. Cheers!!!

Let me start with what is this brain drain, for those whose brain has not come across this phrase. No!!! It’s not a psychic disease or some kind of disorder. Well brain drain is phenomenon where in students from a country gain most of their education goes abroad for work or Post graduation. They obviously turn to live their and become citizen of that country.

So what is the catch here? The catch here is specifically for Premier Indian Institutes. Government of India pours lots of money in creating such names. Also these funding goes in turning this normal Indians, into multinational brands. Don’t we should think of our country? It’s not that i am criticizing them, but it’s still our major concern. At times even though they want to contribute, but they can not.

Thanks to globalization that our government has opened up. Also according to me the major credit goes to IT. Now more and more are turning back to India. They are coming here with their experience, and venturing into new start ups. Which (Entrepreneurship) is the best way to PAY BACK.

Here are two of the companies, which everyone might know, but whose board members are worth a watch. After going through this websites and their management profiles we just fell proud. At last after the long run of Service Industry, some innovation is happening. Innovation is the key component to flourish the industry and to make it self dependent.

PC less Portable life

The scene is : We were having our final engg project demo. There were two hings we need to show to the exernal professor. First is the presentation and Secon is our Project demo. What i did is, i went the day before the D day, and installed all my required software for my project. Also i stored a copy of my presentation. This was aroun 11:oo am. I was relaxed that i completed the installation beforehand, coz most of the time it creates problem at the final movement. After returning from college, all of a sudden i got a thought, what if there some crisis during the DEMO. So what i did is i made a copy on my CD, made backup on my Pen drive, and finally uploaded the content on the internet on my email account. Again i was relaxed, that i had done my backup considering all possible worst case.

Next morning i went to college, and fortunately i got the first chance to Demo the project. So here i was at the PC alloted to me, and were i had done my installations the previous day. But suddenly he sky was falling on my head. To my surprise nothing was there in that PC. I tried the CD, but it didnt work. I tried to download i from the internet, as there was no USB slot for the pen drive on that PC. But The files were too large to be downloaded in that span of time. I was like, I AM DEAD. The efforts being put were blasted. But suddenly our network admin recollected that the PC had a USB slot at the rear end of the cabinet. To my relief i copied all the content on the PC.

Now all the prblem started. I had to setup all the applications on the PC from the scratch. Fotunately again, before the external came, i was done with all this and i completed my DEMO with no more hiccups.

Sign of releif ins't it. I was really lucky, but you people may not be.
So here is the Best possible solution to such a crisis. With onlly one condition that the PC should have a USB slot, which currently all cabinets have. Here is the list of all apllication that can run on your Pen Drive, without the help of your computer. These all applications directly execute on your pen drive. It only needs a PC for the drive purpose.

Parallel and Distributed Databse

- In Parallel database the distribuition is governed solely by performance consideration.

- In Distributed databse distribution of data is governed by factors such as local ownership nad increased availability, in
addition to performance issues.

JDBC and ODBC are called GATEWAY PROTOCOL.

Architecture of Parallel DB :
1 - Shared Nothing
2 - Shared Memory
3 - Shared Disk

Architecture of Distributed DB :
1 - client Server
2 - Collaboration Server
3 - Middleware.

Types of Distributed DB :
1 - Homogenous
2 - Heterogenous

Fragmentation types :
1 - Vertical
2 - horizontal

a bit about Distributed System

Requirments of DS :
- Availability
- Reliability
- Maintainablity
- Security

Goal of DS:
- User Connectivity
- Openness
- Transparency
- Scalability
- Atomic Multicast

1 -Initally all things were consolidated.
1.1 - Disadvatage :
a - Single point failure
b - Performance bottleneck

1.2 - Solution : Remove centralization/consolidation
a - By Sharing Or Mirroring Or Replication Or Caching Or Distributing for
a.1 - PERFORMACE and RELIABILITY
a.2 - AVAILABILITY and SCALABILITY [achieved by Replication, Caching and Distribution]

3 - But with Sharing, Replication and Distribution comes
3.1 - Security Problems
3.2 - Consistency Problems. Solution : Synchronization
3.3 - Fault Tolerance Problems. Solution : Replication

4 - Also With Scalability comes LOSS OF PERFORMANCE.

something about Security

The principal mechanism for ensuring secure communication is that of a secure channel.

A security policy descibes precisely which actions the entities in a system are allowed to take.

Security means Dependibility. i.e.
1 - Reliability
2 - Availibity
3 - Maintainablity
4 - Trust(Security)
  4.1 - Confidentiality
  4.2 - Integrity

Factors for Security
1 - Confidentiality
2 - Integrityy
3 - Availibility

Threats For Security
1 - Interception (unauthorized x confidential)
2 - Interruption (unavailable x available)
3 - Modification (unauthorized x integrity by authentication)
4 - Fabrication (modification of data)

Basic Security Mechanism :
1 - Encryption
2 - Authentication
3 - Authorization
4 - Auditing

Things/Assets to be protected
1 - Data
2 - Hardware
3 - Software

Controlling levels :
1 - User level : Software - Authentication and Encryption
  Hardware - Smart Card etc.
2 - Program level : Writing Secure Code, by OS, Policies,   Administration, Auditing

Ecological footprint

For every kind of energy or matter we consume to maintain our lifestyles, some natural resource, somewhere, gets used up, and waste is produced. The city is an ecosystem, with inputs in the form of land, water, energy, food and materials from the hinterland which, after being utilised, become waste, the output.

The Ecological Footprint is a measure of the load imposed by a particular population or economy on nature. It represents the land (and water) area necessary to sustain current levels of resource consumption and waste discharge by that population. It is an accounting tool that allows us to estimate the resource consumption and waste assimilation requirements of a particular human population or economy in terms of corresponding productive land area.

My Ecological Footprint was:

Food 0.3
Mobility 0.3
Shelter 0.6
Goods/Services 0.2
-------------- ---
Total footprint 1.5

Please make a visit at www.myfootprint.org.. to calculate ur ecological footprints and read the comments!!

social networking war - from my point of view

hmmm what should i start with now. The thing is, there is someting going on in my mind this days. There is THIS type of sites which help us to stay in touch with each others. I mean friends and relatives. And i swear it really helps. I really met some of my old friends, thnx to a web site which provides this kind of facility. Now this type of sites are called Social Networking WebSites. I am here not to favor any of them, but its a discsussion of whats goin in the web market.

Well i will not name the name of the Sites, but let me name the biggies who are behind this projects. Currently i am only focusing on theBIG THREE as i term them "Microsoft, Yahoo and Google".

OK so it all started with the BLOG war. Google acquired Blogger.com. Yahoo started yahoo 360. Microsoft started spaces.microsoft.com.

Well yahoo 360 is not a core blog concept, but currently lets assume it as a blog site. This is because yahoo doesnt have a site dedicated to WEB LOGGING(Blog)

Oh Ghosh!!!, let me be back on the topic, otherwise i will reach on to some other discussion. So after bloging came this image posting sites. Here yahoo was first to buy out Flickr, which is currently the best in this market.Ofcourse there was images.yahoo.com, but nobody bothered to look at it.Fortunately Microsoft and Google doesnt need this kind of site, since their blogging counterpart already supportes image posting.

All this and many other sites were acquired, to reach to a final goal of what is think is THE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES. Google was affiliated with Orkut. Yahoo acquired Del.icuo.us and Upcoming.org. There were also some contenders who probably pioneerd this concept. Likewise we have Ringo, Birthday alarm, HI5 etc. Somehow these sites doesnt clicked. They were bulky, very very slow in operation. But the concept was awesome.

Beware, we are now at the start of the war between the BIG THREE on this concept. Orkut is currenlty leading the three. Orkut is the best of these. Though it was not a child of those Googlers, but the way it was made, is perfect to get affiliated with google. It has those caharacterstics of Google: Simplicity, Fantastic Interface and Navigational Facility. Also the site is very quick. Kudos to ORKUT, the guy who created this genius. But one thing you people can relate him is, he is also from Stanford, Gotch ya!!!. These stanford people are going to rule the world in near future, hahaha!!!. Now is YAHOO's turn. It has integrated all of its acquisitions and sites to yahoo 360. Also the blog in yahoo 360 can be directly integrated to your geocities account. So all thing comes to a single point Yahoo 360. Now this have many features of a social networking site other then just blogging.Very nicely organised, ofcourse its yahoo, the ppl who pioneered the INTERNET.

Hence comes the turn of the GIANT. Yes you people guessed it right. THE NAME IS "microsoft". How can it be left behind. Microsoft has way behind started a site named WALLOP.com. It was just a simple blogging site, but with some unique features of connecting with friends. This site was one of the best because it was totally on MACROMEDIA FLASH. The interface was mind blowing. But now after a long time when i went to this site, there was nothing. Only there is meassage for the people, that they are getting ready for the war. JUST visit the website its FANTASTIC. Now only GOD can predict how will microsoft will turn this whole concept into. WAIT and WATCH.

Above article is just my floow of thoughts on the topic. Its not supporting any side. The article its just my perception and assumptios. So some of the facts may be worng or uncomplete.

If you people have read this whole article completely, thank you very much for taking time to read it.Well the thank should be more for bearing my mistakes if any.
I will be very obliged to improve on your positive comments/suggestion. just fell Free to comment on any aspect, since this my first article of any type and od such a lenght. THANKS A LOT in advance.

OPERA launches a new version 9.

Hi guys, my first post on this blog. Being a technology enthusiast and an internet freak, I have always been exploring new software being introduced to the internet community. With reference to the previous post that discusses about the free software, I would like to comment on an important part of the internet users life - the internet browser. Previously, like all software, browsers were bundled with Oses. But with Firefox and a host of others giving free downloads of their feature-rich browsers, users are now faced with a plethora of options to choose from.
Arguably, Microsoft Corpn.'s Internet Explorer, Mozilla's Firefox have been on the forefront. Internet Explorer, now available in version 7 and Firefox in it's 1.5 version have taken up most of the market. But a long time player has now come up with it's new version in a bid to capture a chunk of the browser pie. This new entrant is Opera v9.

The next part of the post has been taken from the News.com website - http://news.com.com/Opera+releases+beta+of+latest+browser/2100-1032_3-6063153.html?tag=nl

Opera Software on Thursday released a beta version of its free browser, Opera 9, which offers features such as small Web applications and content blocking.

The beta for Opera 9 will include six new features ranging from Widgets, or small Web programs, to support for download technology BitTorrent to customization of search engines.

"Opera 9 brings powerful new features to enhance the Web browsing experience and empower Web 2.0 developers," Jon Tetzchner, Opera chief executive, said in a statement. The small Web applications will range from streaming news to games to multimedia capabilities and allow developers to also create their own and share them, without regard to the operating system.

Opera 9 also aims to allow users to click a torrent file and begin its download without having to rely on a separate BitTorrent application for downloading large files. Users will also have the option of customizing which search engine to use with their browser and the ability to block content, such as certain ads or images, on a particular Web page. Other features are designed to enable users to open a number of tabs at once in Opera 9 and view the contents via a thumbnail preview or image.

Users are encouraged to try put this version of the software and post their reviews here.

What is Free Software

Free software is defined as software that respects four fundamental freedoms:
(0) freedom to run the software as you wish,
(1) freedom to study the source code and modify it to do what you wish,
(2) freedom to make and redistribute copies, and
(3) freedom to publish modified versions.
Only programmers can directly exercise freedoms 1 and 3, but all users can exercise freedoms 0 and 2, and all users benefit from the modifications that programmers write and publish.

Factors Affecting Fuel Economy

1. Frequent stopping and short distance travel consumers more fuel.
2. Needless idling at traffic lights affect fuel consumption e.g. ten minutes idling wastes 100cc of fuel
3. Driving at higher speed consumes more fuel than driving at steady speed of 45 to 55 Km/hr. in top gear.
4. Changing of gears at the speeds mentioned below enhances the fuel efficiency.

Gear Recommended Apeeds
1st to 2nd - 10 Km/hr.
2nd to 3rd - 20 Km/hr.
3rd to 4th - 30 Km/hr.
4th to 5th - 40 Km/hr.

5. Try to drive in 5th gear as much possible.
6. Adultered or less quantity of fuel dipensed by petrol pumps would indicate poor fuel efficiency too.
7. Less tyre pressure increase fuel consumption.
8. Clogged air filter, worn out clutch, badly turned engine and high pollution levels increase fuel consumption.
9. Do not unnecessary race the engine.

Why name : Torjan Horse.

According to Greek legend, the greeks defeated the Trojans by an act of trickery. Led by the soldier Odysseus, the greeks constructed a giant wooden horse and left it outside the wall of Troy. The torjans pulled the horse into the city, not knowing that greeks soldiers were hiding inside the horse. That night, the greeks crept out of the horse and took the city by surprise.

India's most valuable brands [full story : click me]

The 25 brands in the Brand Finance league table are ranked on brand value: the value of the asset at a point in time assessed using the relief royalty method.

A prerequisite of the top Indian brands was that they were listed in the top 500 on the Bombay Stock Exchange - which is why brands like Hutch, Sahara India Pariwar and Kingfisher Airlines were not included. The top 500 by market capitalisation were shortlisted to 50, of which the top 25 made the final ranking.

In some cases, the lack of information on the Indian businesses of certain major international brands (Coca-Cola, Pepsi and so on) meant they had to be left out. Holding companies that own a portfolio of branded businesses (Hindustan Lever, for instance) were excluded, since it isn't possible to identify revenue streams for individual brands from publicly available sources.

Not surprisingly, Indian Oil Corporation emerges as the most valuable brand with a trademark value of $5.6 billion.

This value accounts for 40 per cent of IOC's market value, representing the amount by which the brand is likely to enhance the company's future cash flows. But despite its high value IOC is at risk of losing the brand revenues it currently enjoys to more powerful brands like Bharat Petroleum in the future.

HOW THEY STACK UP

State Bank of India and Bharat Petroleum Corp follow in second and third place respectively, with brand values of just over $3 billion each. SBI has improved its brand power by engaging with consumers and developing products and services that are differentiated.

However, the bank still has enormous value potential and has only scratched the surface as of now. If SBI continues to invest in marketing and pushing up its service delivery, it will give other banks a run for their money.

Meanwhile, BPCL's pioneering efforts in retail marketing, including branded petrol, petrocards, fleet cards, convenience stores, one-stop shops and its "Pure for sure" logo still give it the edge over other oil PSUs. It is aggressively looking at increasing non-fuel revenues by leveraging its brand.

The first set of private sector brands, Tata Consultancy Services and Reliance Industries, follow, both worth over $2.7 billion each.

It will be interesting to see how the two brothers extract value from the Reliance brand in future, given that Reliance Communication Ventures is now listed and Mukesh Ambani's retail plans are in overdrive. There are also some strategic issues that remain unresolved, including how the corporate brands of the two groups will be separated and yet at the same time keep the Reliance brand robust.

The top echelons have some diversity in terms of Tata Motors, demonstrating the company's focused strategy of cross-border acquisitions, strategic alliances and a steady stream of new product launches - Ace, Dicor, Starbus and Globus and its commitment to build the Rs 1 lakh car. This brand is ready to make a global mark.

Smaller banks, such as ICICI Bank, are rapidly boosting their brand power by offering customers holistic financial services and a certain level of functional and service delivery.

While SBI and Bank of Baroda are waking up to the role of the brands inside their businesses, ICICI Bank is now trying to forge an emotional connection with its customers with its Hum hai na communication.

The benefits of ICICI leveraging its brand are visible - it has registered 95.61 per cent five-year CAGR growth of fee income. Fee income is a good barometer to gauge a bank's efficiency in using its brand and customer capital through cross selling. All other Indian banks - including HDFC Bank - have a lot of catching up to do.

Despite the fact that TCS is smaller in terms of brand value than IOC, it is India's most powerful brand in terms of its ability to sustain earnings into the future with the least risk. If TCS continues build up intellectual property, create strategic alliances and extend its footprint into new services where it can extract volume and premium, its rise in the value table will not be surprising.

Wipro emerges as the second most valuable and powerful IT brand. This comes after a year of acquiring firms, giving Wipro access to new skills and intellectual property, upping marketing spends and ramping up to scale the consultancy target.

Wipro's product engineering and design services are especially pushing hard to deliver on innovation to create and sustain revenue streams for the future. The evidence towards a more IP and marketing driven model lies in the number of patent applications that have been made by TCS and Wipro over the past three to four years.

For an industry caught between run-of-the-mill software services and high-end products, IP licensing and sales will not only boost financial returns but also build long-term competitive advantage.

Infosys has made some inroads into high end consulting. However, it needs to urgently review its IP and marketing investments and come out victorious in the battle to protect its well-known trademark.

hey great news - DVD war is finally over.

Well you all might be knowing about the DVD war goin between the Tech TITANS.We (consumers) are only the beneficiaries of that. If people dont know about this let me brief you up.

Hmmm let me put this way, Sony and Toshiba basically started this, upto my knowledge. They are competing for a DVD fromat different then the current one, which may store upto 50GB. yeah!!! Thats right 50GB, who will need a hard disk after that. Just for our OS we will need a minimum of say 40GB thats it.

So a DVD format from SONY and their is called the BLU-ray, name coming from the color of the laser. Format coming from Toshiba is named HD-DVD (High Definition). So all the major corp behemoths are supporting one of this formats. Supporting mainly means FUNDING.

But it seems that this will create problems for consumer like us, especially from developing countries. So after some fight they decided to some how end the fight, and collaborate for Format. But after a lot of TALKSSS(:)) they derived that its not possible.

So they again moved in the opposite direction. But let me tell you that, companies producing computers and many others decided to support both this
formats.

And FINALLY the day has arrived. The day we all are waiting for, hurrayyyyy!!!! THE FIRST DVD HAS ENTERED THE MARKET. IT IS PREPARED BY TDK, and offcourse it is a BLU-RAY disk. The first HD-DVD laptop and first Blu-Ray PC has entered the market

My story!

Before you read this poem, I must warn you,
It's a big one, took me minutes twenty-two.
To pen down my thoughts, for you to read,
Just in case, you might in the future need!

'Twas a Thursday eve, I still remember,
Even the date's clear - 8th of September,
A red-letter day, embossed in gold,
I witnessed a natural wonder, lo and behold!

Sitting on a couch, sipping hot coffee!
Enjoying myself, with an occasional toffee,
Down she came, with steps so graceful,
I thought to myself, who's this b-e-a-utiful?

She sat on the couch, in front of me,
As if to allow, only me to see,
Oh my God! I exclaimed, what a creation by you!
You read every man's heart, what a master are you!

I was introduced to her, ______ was her name,
Arts she studied, brilliant acads to her fame!
She smiled ever so gently, my heart skipped a beat,
In the cold chilly environs, I just felt some heat!

Introductions over, now's the time to talk.
I began to feel jittery, just wanted to take a walk.
I mustered enough courage, and asked her many a thing,
It helped me soothe my nerves, and get things under my wing!

Time played its trick, and soon I had to leave,
Before leaving I said, Boy!, you did something achieve,
Parting is such a sweet sorrow, so said Shakespeare,
I couldn't agree more, but right now, right here!

I slept that night, her picture in my eyes!
What a beauty she was, both witty and wise!
For the first time in my life, I did a soft dance,
For the first time in my life, I had some good romance!

I woke up the next morning, still in that daze,
What a sight she was, couldn't take off my gaze!
I called on our mutual friend, and told all I had to tell,
Her happy face changed color, that's when lightning fell!

She's already committed, just a week back, said her,
On a cold Friday morning, I just felt colder!
My heart stopped abruptly, my mouth went dry,
the phone slipped from my hands, I just wanted to cry!

My friend consoled me, but I shed more than a tear.
For days together, nothing could get me to cheer!
Will I ever, find a better love in the future near?
What if not, that was all I used to fear!

That was when He came, and told me the truth!
Boy, don't you realise you're in the prime age of youth!
This had to happen, sooner or later,
But you must only learn, not to be a quitter!

Was it really love, He asked me twice,
Tell me the truth, I want no lies!
It then dawned upon me, I was a big loser!
'Tis no rocket-science, to know the right answer!

I stood upright and dried my eyes,
And looked upwards, into the blue skies.
You're right I said, feeling much better,
'Twas no love, not even a single letter!

That's my boy, said He, now don't you worry!
I'll take all care, so you must not hurry!
Just remember this, that you'll find your love true!
'Coz someone beautiful somewhere, is waiting for you!

be safe then sorry.

"Driving is a privilege. and like all privileges, it comes with certain responsibilities." - Lee Iacocca.

Offcourse who knows better then one of the birth places for automobile industry : USA.
Surveys have shown that fatalites would drop by at least 50 percent overnight if everybody used seat belts. Among other reasons, seat belts can prevent you from being unconscious in a crash, which can happen even at relatively slow speeds.

Accident on two-wheeler have also reduced considerably by using Helmets. One more thing if you are allowing one more person to sit on the bike try to have helmet from them too. Since it is your duty for their protection.

Also avoid rash driving , since being a responsible citizen it is our duty not to heart anyone.

So if you dont bother to wear any of these for yourself, atleast think of your family.

intro SQL (SEEQUEL)

The origin of SQL and the development of Relational Database go hand-in-hand down the historical path. The relational database concept was developed by Dr.E.F.Codd, an IBM researcher. In June 1970, Dr.Codd published an article entitled"A Relational Model Of Data For Large Shared Data Banks", communication of ACM, Vol.13, No6, Jun 1970, describing his mathematical theory of how data could be stored and maniulated in tables. SQL was conceived in an IBM San Jose research laboratory in mid 1970s as a database Language. - Oracle was earlier called Relational Software, Inc. SQL was completely standardized in 92.

Types of Databases
1) Hierarchical : Mainframe eg: IBM IMS{Information Management System}(1968)
2) Network : Minicomputer eg: DEC and Data General.
3) Relational : PC + Minicaomputer + Mainframe.

NOTE : No DBMS conforms completely to SQL-92
RDBMS meets 12 COdd Rules (published in 1985)

revision of OSI layer

The 7 Layers of the OSI Model:

The OSI, or Open System Interconnection, model defines a networking framework for implementing protocols in seven layers. Control is passed from one layer to the next, starting at the application layer in one station, proceeding to the bottom layer, over the channel to the next station and back up the hierarchy.

Application(Layer 7) This layer supports application and end-user processes. Communication partners are identified, quality of service is identified, user authentication and privacy are considered, and any constraints on data syntax are identified. Everything at this layer is application-specific. This layer provides application services for file transfers, e-mail, and other network software services.

Presentation(Layer 6) This layer provides independence from differences in data representation (e.g., encryption) by translating from application to network format, and vice versa. This layer formats and encrypts data to be sent across a network, providing freedom from compatibility problems. It is sometimes called the syntax layer.

Session(Layer 5) This layer establishes, manages and terminates connections between applications. The session layer sets up, coordinates, and terminates conversations, exchanges, and dialogues between the applications at each end. It deals with session and connection coordination.

Transport(Layer 4) This layer provides transparent transfer of data between end systems, or hosts, and is responsible for end-to-end error recovery and flow control. It ensures complete data transfer.

Network(Layer 3) This layer provides switching and routing technologies, creating logical paths, known as virtual circuits, for transmitting data from node to node. Routing and forwarding are functions of this layer, as well as addressing, internetworking, error handling, congestion control and packet sequencing.

Data Link(Layer 2) At this layer, data packets are encoded and decoded into bits. It furnishes transmission protocol knowledge and management and handles errors in the physical layer, flow control and frame synchronization. The data link layer is divided into two sublayers: The Media Access Control (MAC) layer and the Logical Link Control (LLC) layer. The MAC sublayer controls how a computer on the network gains access to the data and permission to transmit it. The LLC layer controls frame synchronization, flow control and error checking.

Physical(Layer 1) This layer conveys the bit stream - electrical impulse, light or radio signal -- through the network at the electrical and mechanical level. It provides the hardware means of sending and receiving data on a carrier, including defining cables, cards and physical aspects.
